ASA Level One Swimming Assistant

Entry Requirements:

You must be at least 16 years old.

Overview:

If your a keen swimmer with passion to become a swimming teacher, then the ASA Level One Swimming Assistant course is for you. This course is the gateway into a career in aquatics and will give you the knowledge you’ll need to start your journey in becoming a Swim Teacher.

Delivery and Assessment:

Assessment is through a mixture of practical and theory assessments over the duration of the course. Your assessor will be the tutor who delivers the course to you, they will set you tasks during the week, and you will be expected to complete them. This course is not graded, learners will either meet the requirements and pass or will not meet the requirements and be referred.

Progression:

Progression would be to the complete ASA Level Two Swimming Teacher course.

ASA Level Two Swimming Teacher

Entry Requirements:

You must be at least 16 years of age at the start of the course.

You must hold a ASA Level One Swimming Assistant (Teaching) qualification.

Overview:

The Level Two Swimming Teacher course is essential for anyone wanting to seek employment in being a Swim Teacher. This course is a practical qualification using your skills learnt from Level one to help develop the knowledge you’ve already gained.

Delivery and Assessment:

The assessment is made up of six key parts which are; theoretical questions, lesson plans, lesson overview, observation record, evaluation and action plan. There is no end of course exam, but tasks will be set by the tutor which are mandatory in completion to be able to pass the course.

Progression:

Holding a ASA Level Two Swimming Teacher qualification means you are eligible to seek teaching roles through employment.

You may also want to develop your skills further by taking CPD workshops (continuous professional development)

STA Level Two Baby and Pre School Award

Entry Requirements:

Be 18 years of age or older

Hold current membership of STA

Hold the safety Award for Teachers (This can be completed after the course but your course certificate will not be released until evidence of this is received)

Hold the STA Safeguarding Children, Young People and Vulnerable Adults Certificates (This can be completed after the course but your course certificate will not be released until evidence of this is received)

Overview:

The aim of the STA Level Two Baby and Pre School Award is to produce and develop teachers that can teach aquatic activities to babies and young children.

Delivery and Assessment:

On the course you will be expected to complete a portfolio and work sheet questions, this must meet the standard of the assessor. You must also complete 30 minute of poolside teaching and 15 minute teaching lessons to between 2-4 adult-child pairs. There is also a 30 question multiple choice paper. This is a three day course with 24 hours of non contact learning also required.

Progression:

On completion of this qualification candidates will be able to seek employment throughout the country delivering baby and preschool lessons.

RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ)

Entry Requirements:

You must be at least 16 years old.

You must also be able to:

Jump/dive into deep water

Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds

Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water

Tread water for 30 seconds

Surface dive to the floor of the pool

Climb out unaided without ladder/steps and where the pool design permits

Overview:

The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) National Pool Lifeguard Qualification(NPLQ) is a qualification to train you to become a life guard. Becoming a life guard is a great stepping stone into the leisure industry. To become a competent life guard it is essential that you are physically fit and have good hearing, and good eye sight.

Delivery and Assessment:

Throughout the course the course trainer will be continually assessing practical skills and the NPLQ syllabus. The final assessment will include verbal questions and answers, practical demonstrations of water rescue skills, CPR and first aid.

Progression:

On completion of this qualification candidates can seek employment as a Lifeguard across the country. Experienced candidates can look to complete the RLSS Trainer/ Assessor course which enable you to deliver NPLQ courses.

STA Level Three Pool Plant Operator

Entry Requirements:

You must be at least 18 years old.

Overview:

The Pool Plant Operations qualification aims to enable candidates to manage and maintain swimming pool, spa and interactive play feature operation via receiving the training necessary to reflect the most up-to-date requirements and standards for pool plant operation. The course qualification lasts for five years.

Delivery and Assessment:

You will be expected to complete the course manual, complete a 25 multiple choice paper. There will also be practical work which will include water testing analysing and interpretation.

Progression:

On completion of this course you will be qualified to operate a swimming pool plant room. This qualification must be updated after five years.

SCUK Safeguarding and Protecting Children

Entry Requirements:

You must be at least 16 years old.

Overview:

Every child deserves to enjoy their sport. This class will raise your awareness of the tell-tale signs of abuse, and give you the tools and confidence you need to deal with any issues sensitively, appropriately and effectively should the need ever arise in your coaching career.

Delivery and Assessment:

This is a three hour course which and the qualification is recognised nationally by sports clubs and employers.

Progression:

This qualification must be updated every three years.

Entry Requirements:

Overview:

The Trainer Assessor course is a week long and is based around four modules. Which are;

8th Edition National Pool Lifeguard Qualification

Delivery and Assessment:

This is a five day course. You must also tutor a course and assess a course before you will be granted full TA status.

Progression:

On completion of this course you can seek employment as a NPLQ tutor/assessor.

Swim England Teaching Preschool Swimming

Entry Requirements:

Applicants must be 16 years of age or older

Applicants must also hold one of the following qualifications:
Swim England Level 2 Teaching Swimming (or ASA equivalent)

Overview:

This course is for you if you wish to be qualified to deliver swimming lessons to children from 3 months to 5 years old. This course covers Adult and Baby, Adult and Toddler and Duckling lessons.

You will learn about: The responsibilities and role of a pre-school swimming teacher

How early years development, stages of play and reflexes impact on learners swimming ability

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, health related conditions and how to respond and adapt to them

How to introduce and teach the core aquatic skills in a fun way

The different supports and holds to use in lessons.

The advantages and disadvantages of different types of equipment

How to assess participants swimming ability

How to plan, adapt and teach lessons which cater for groups with different levels of ability

Key teaching and lesson management skills including safety and safeguarding, time management and organisational skills, behaviour management, communication skills, teaching methods and motivational techniques

How to plan for your professional development

By the end of this course, you will be able to independently plan, prepare, deliver and evaluate a series of pre-school swimming lessons.

Assessment is made up of a series of component parts: theoretical questions, lessons plans, lesson overview, observation record, evaluation and action plan.

All the assessment criteria must be achieved

All evidence produced by the learner must be their own

This qualification is not graded. You will either pass or be referred.
